My name is Summayah Zafar, and I am a third-year Health Psychology Doctorate student at the University of the West of England (UWE). I am currently in the recruitment stage for my thesis, which focuses on understanding the experiences and psychosocial support needs of Black and South Asian women living with secondary breast cancer.
As a Pakistani woman and someone working in cancer support, this research is very important to me. I hope to help share the voices that are not always heard and contribute, in some way, to improving support and understanding within our communities.![]()

Understanding The Experiences and Support Needs of Black and South Asian Women Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer.![]()
You are being invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide whether to take part or not. It is important for you to understand why this research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others should you wish. Please ask if there is anything that is not clear. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Summayah Zafar via email summayah2.zafar@live.uwe.ac.uk. Thank you for reading this information.![]()
Who are the researchers?
Thank you for your interest in this research. My name is Summayah Zafar, and I am a postgraduate student studying for a Doctorate in Health Psychology at the University of West England (UWE), Bristol. This research forms part of my doctoral thesis and is supervised by Dr Helena Lewis-Smith (helena.lewis-smith@uwe.ac.uk) and Dr Elizabeth Jenkinson (elizabeth2.jenkinson@uwe.ac.uk) from the University.
As well as studying, I work as a Cancer Support Worker, helping people who are living with metastatic breast cancer. I have seen how challenging this journey can be. Being Pakistani Muslim, I also understand how culture and background can shape these experiences. That is why this study is important to me.![]()
What is the purpose of the study?
The purpose of this study is to better understand challenges faced by Black and South Asian women living with metastatic breast cancer. While much research exists on breast cancer in general, the voices of women from ethnic minority backgrounds, especially those living with metastatic breast cancer, are often underrepresented. This study aims to give space to these voices, helping highlight their experiences, support needs, and barriers to care. It is hoped that this research will help improve culturally sensitive support for Black and South Asian women.
Metastatic breast cancer (also called secondary or advanced breast cancer) is when the breast cancer cells spread from the breast into other parts of the body.![]()
Why have I been invited to take part?
We are inviting Black and South Asian women over the age of 18, who live in the UK, able to communicate in English at a level that allows them to understand the study information and take part in the interview, and who have been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, to share their experiences.![]()
What are the benefits of taking part?
By taking part in this study, you will be contributing to an important area of research aimed at improving support and care for Black and South Asian women living with metastatic breast cancer. Your insights may inform the care of healthcare professionals, influence policy, and help develop more culturally inclusive support services. It is anticipated that the findings from this study will be published in an academic journal following the completion of the thesis.
To thank you for your time and contribution to this research, you will have the opportunity to enter a prize draw to win one of three £10 shopping vouchers. Taking part in the prize draw is entirely voluntary and is not a requirement for taking part in the study.
If you would like to enter, you will be asked to provide your email address after the interview. This contact information will be stored separately from your interview data to maintain anonymity and ensure confidentiality. Once all the interviews have been completed, three participants will be randomly selected to receive a £10 shopping voucher. Winners will be notified via email.![]()
Do I have to take part?
Taking part in the study is completely voluntary. It is your choice whether to take part, and you can withdraw within 30 days after the interview without giving reason. Deciding not to take part will not affect the care or support you receive in way.
If you decide to take part in the study, you will be asked to indicate consent. Once you provide consent, you will be asked to complete some questions about yourself (e.g. age, ethnicity) prior to the interview. You can also skip any questions during the interview or stop the interview at any time. Your comfort and wellbeing are most important through the research process.![]()
What will happen if I take part and what do I have to do?
If you decide to take part in this research, you will be invited to take part in a one-to-one interview with the researcher, Summayah Zafar. The Interview can take place online via Microsoft Teams, by telephone, or face-to-face for participants in the Bristol area. Participants can choose the format that is most convenient for them.
The aim of the interview is to explore your personal experiences of living with metastatic breast cancer as a woman from an ethnic minority background. The researcher is particularly interested in understanding your emotional, social and psychological experiences, such as how your diagnosis impacts your daily life, your relationships, and identity. This includes talking about what has helped or made things more difficult for your, and what support you feel is still needed.
The interview is expected to last around 45 to 60 minutes, but you are welcome to talk for as long or as little as you wish. There are no wrong or right answer, as we are interested in your individual views and experiences. You do not have to answer any questions you do not feel comfortable with, and you are free to pause or stop the interview at any point without giving a reason.
With your permission the interview will be audio recorded. This is so that the researcher can accurately write down (transcribe) what you say, which will be used later for analysis. All interviews will be conducted in English. Please note that interpreters will not be provided for this study, as there is no funding available to enable this.
Prior to the interview, you will also be asked to complete a brief online survey, where you will be asked some questions about your background (e.g., your age) and cancer journey (e.g., when you were diagnosed).![]()
What will happen to your information?
All the information provided will be kept strictly confidential. We will not report your name in the findings. Rather, you will be given a fake name (which you are welcome to choose), and this will be used when presenting your quotes. Your answers to the questions about yourself (e.g. your age, relationship status) will be kept in a safe place and will only be used for the purpose of this research. All recorded information will be destroyed once the study has been completed. The personal information collected in this research project (e.g., the interview audio recording and transcript, the consent form, and the ‘questions about you’ form) will be processed by the University in accordance with the relevant data protection legislation (please see the GDPR privacy notice for more information).![]()
How can I drop out from the study?
You have the right to drop out from the study up to 30 days after the interview, without giving a reason. If you would like to do this, please contact me via email. However, please note that once the data has been analysed and my thesis has been submitted, it will no longer be possible to remove your data. Therefore, if you wish to drop out, please contact me within one month of your interview.![]()
What will happen to the results from the study?
The results from the study will be written up as part of my Doctorate in Health Psychology thesis. In addition, the research may be submitted for publication in an academic, peer-reviewed journals, or presented at relevant academic conferences. However, you will not be named or identified in any outcomes from the research. The findings may also be shared with healthcare professionals, wider communities and relevant charities to help improve care, raise awareness, and inform more culturally tailored psychological, support services.![]()
Are there any risks involved?
Whilst we do not anticipate any risks, we understand that discussing your experiences of cancer may bring up emotional or distressing feelings. Should this happen, you are free to pause or stop the interview at any time. Your wellbeing is the most important thing.
At the end of this document, you will find a list of support services you may find helpful should you need additional emotional support.![]()
Who has reviewed this study?
This study has been reviewed approved by the University of the West of England Ethnics Committee to make sure that it is being carried out in an appropriate manner. Any comments. Questions or complaints about the ethical conduct of the study can be addressed to the Research Ethics Committee at The University of the West of England at Researchethics@uwe.ac.uk![]()
